    A program providing advisory and material aid as needed to immigrants, sponsors and their families.

    LEAGUE OF MERCY

    A caring outreach ministry of consistent visitation, service and love. Institutions (veterans, children's, aged and mental, etc.), hospitals, nursing home, private homes, prisons, all benefit from this ministry. In cooperation with institutional administration, spiritual, social, personal and practical support is provided in the form of worship services, social gatherings, and small gift items given at special times of the year. These services, including assistance with personal needs, shopping and respite care, are also provided to homebound persons.

    All members of the League of Mercy are volunteers, Salvationists and non-Salvationists, with a minimum age of 14.

    An international organization within The Salvation Army designed to unite medical personnel, retired or active, professional and non-professional, in the bond of faith, service and fellowship by personal contact and correspondence.

    MEN'S FELLOWSHIP CLUB

    A group program for men in The Salvation Army, encouraging the development of leadership. The purposes are to promote good fellowship, to communicate social values, to facilitate the learning of social skills and self expression in groups, to stimulate interest in community service and, through various service projects, to contribute to the moral and spiritual welfare of youth.

    MISSING PERSONS SERVICES

    A worldwide service which traces and locates individuals. The primary purpose is to reunite adult family members who have a mutual desire to find each other. Confidentiality and respect for privacy are key characteristics of this work, which is greatly facilitated by the Army's international nature.

    MUSICAL ORGANIZATIONS

    Music groups which function within various programs, helping participants to develop individual musical capabilities and leadership skills. Salvation Army musical organizations render Christian service in group worship, outreach, recreation and education activities. They also participate in various community programs. The members of these groups voluntarily serve to further the purposes of The Salvation Army through music.

    OUTPOST

    An extension of the Salvation Army corps community center located at a distance from the main center. Activities for all ages include Sunday meetings, as well as weekday programs designed to meet the physical, educational and spiritual needs of the individuals.

    OVERSEAS CHILDREN'S SPONSORSHIP FUND

    A program whereby persons are enable to give financial support to children in Salvation Army institutions in developing countries. The money is sent to the territorial headquarters in the area where the donor lives, where it is processed to those institutions which have requested support. The sponsor is linked to a child in that institution. The money may also be given to the institution to be used at their discretion.

    SALVAGE OPERATIONS

    A program conducted in a community located in an area not covered by an adult rehabilitation center. Standards, policies and procedures must be maintained in conformity with the "Men's Social Service Handbook of Standards, Principles and Policies".     SALVATION ARMY ADVENTURE CORPS

    A Christian education program designed for school-aged boys. Its purposes are to involve Salvationist boys in organized program designed to challenge them to commit their lives to Christ and the Army and to reach out into the community to attract boys, to lead them to Christ, and (if they are unchurched) to encourage them to make the Army their spiritual home and place of service. There are three grade levels: Explorers, grades 1-5; Rangers, grades 6-8; and Adventurers, grades 9-12.

    SAWSO (SALVATION ARMY WORLD SERVICE OFFICE)

    An organization, whose purpose is to cooperate with territorial and International Headquarters, as well as various world governments, in order to further the charitable and humanitarian endeavors of The Salvation Army in the less developed countries of the world. It is designed, in general, to improve the capability of The Salvation Army, particularly in the United States of America, to assist in development efforts of individuals, communities and nations in the developing areas of the world through the provision of indigenous leadership training in the planning and implementation of projects carrying out the goals of The Salvation Army.     SCOUTING

    Salvation Army-sponsored scouting units chartered by the boy Scouts of America. This organization provides a program which promotes good citizenship, teaches helpfulness to others and trains in skills and outdoor activities. Through the God and Country program of scouting, boys are encouraged to more active participation in church attendance and programs. Scouting activities are divided into three groups:

    SELF-DENIAL/WORLD SERVICES EFFORT

    A year-round project, characterized by prayer and fund-raising, to support the Army's worldwide ministry. Funds are contributed by soldiers in response to training in Christian stewardship, and by friends of The Salvation Army. The proceeds are used to further the Army's work in other countries.     Group programs to provide education, social, recreational and spiritual activities for the elderly. (See Group Work and Services to Aging.)

    SENIOR CITIZENS RESIDENCE

    A long-term housing facility for senior adults. Along with comfortable accommodations, services may include nutritious meals, counseling, structured activities and other programs. Senior residences operated by The Salvation Army are generally termed "Booth Residence" in the Eastern Territory; "Booth Manor" in the Central Territory; "William Booth Garden Apartments" and "The Salvation Army Booth Towers" in the Southern Territory; and "Silvercrest Residence" in the Western Territory.

    SERVICE CENTERS

    A Service Center is established in an expanding community where certain Salvation Army services are needed, and can be afforded, but the community may not be ready to proceed with the development of a corps community center. Yet it may have already outgrown the "service unit" concept. The Service Center does not require officers, but employees may manage all of the activity involved. The ideal goal is that as the community continues to expand, so will The Salvation Army until such time as a viable corps program can be established. An additional concept allows for the establishment of a Service Center in the event that it may become necessary to close a corps for one reason or another.

    SERVICE EXTENSION PROGRAM

    A program carried on by local volunteers who serve as a committee representing the Army in communities where there are no appointed Salvation Army officers. Their functions include raising funds and rendering services as may be required by local needs. A divisional headquarters staff person is assigned to act as liaison between the service unit in the community and The Salvation Army's network of statewide and interstate services. Local services include, but are not limited to, interim assistance to families and individuals and comprehensive emergency assistance. Statewide services include camping, disaster assistance, and services to unwed mothers. (See Advisory Organization.)

    SERVICES TO AGING

    Services, the goals of which may vary from the short-range objectives of promoting sound personality and social development to the longer-range objective of rental housing for the aging. These programs may include the weekly "drop-in club" at corps community centers, or the center with facilities and staff for a daily schedule of activities geared to the social, spiritual, physical and mental health, the proper nourishment and the cultural interests of the aging. Housing for the elderly includes residential accommodations, feeding arrangements and social services necessary for the comfort of people in their senior years. (See Senior Citizens Residence.)

    SERVICES TO THE MILITARY

    A variety of services extended to men and women of the armed forces. Recruits are given a kit of personal articles upon departure from their recruiting station. The Salvation Army league of mercy regularly visits veterans in hospitals, bringing cheer and inspiration and providing personal services. The Salvation Army is also available to families of military personnel at home and overseas for counseling and for general supportive assistance in emergency situations.

    SHORT-TERM HOUSING FACILITY

    A facility which provides housing for individuals or families during a period of crisis. The unit may be part of a larger program such as a corps community center, a Social Services Department or an adult rehabilitation center, or may be in a separate building. The name "Red Shield Lodge" or "Red Shield Residence" is used for some of these facilities. Basically, The Salvation Army has three categories of short-term housing, differentiated by the usual length of stay and the level of services offered.

    SOCIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT

    A program unit, usually in larger communities, which administers a broad range of human services. The department may function in a direct service role or in a coordinating or administrative role for programs throughout the specified area. The range of services may include material assistance, lodging and meals, disaster work, various kinds of counseling and casework, advocacy, missing persons services, information and referral, and seasonal activities such as camping and Christmas programs. The level and kind of staff qualifications are commensurate with the services offered by the particular program unit.

    SOCIAL SERVICES PROGRAM

    A program designed to provide comprehensive emergency assistance for distressed people, regardless of race or creed, age or sex, whose need is brought to the Army's attention either by referral or direct contact. The scope of the service is determined by the needs of the community and by available resources. In communities where there are no specialized institutional services or central social service department, the corps social services program may be expanded to include family service, service to the homeless, emergency shelters, missing persons service and Christmas assistance as well as other seasonal activities.     SUNDAY SCHOOL

    An activity conducted each Sunday to meet the spiritual needs of individuals through a prescribed curriculum of Bible studies taught at the interest levels of age groups from infancy to adulthood. Opportunities are given for worship and fellowship.

    SUPPORT SERVICES

    Administrative supervision and consultation given by various headquarters of The Salvation Armynational, territorial and divisional. Executive staffs of the various headquarters seek to establish and maintain approved standards of management and service delivery through regular channels of administrative contact, including visits by field supervisory personnel. Areas of consultation and supervision include: accounting and statistical procedures, budgets, property and legal matters, community relations, fund raising, personnel, and program activities such as religious meetings, group work, social services and other specialized programming.
